A little over a year ago I wrote a post venting about the overuse of the font Papyrus. It hasn’t gotten much better, in fact since I wrote that article my hatred for the font has multiplied tenfold. I cringe whenever I see it, and the people who I’m with either understand or they don’t. I categorize them in two way:

A. The people who have been around me long enough to know my devoted hatred to the letter form. This includes fellow designers who feel the same way, or friends and acquaintances who have grown to hate it along with me.

B. The people who wouldn’t know comic sans if it bit them in the foot and certainly didn’t realize people actually cared about fonts. They look at me funny, label me the “font police” and think I’m meticulous to small detail. Eventually in enough time they become a part of the first group.

People that are fighting the battle with me:
I know I am not alone and with just googling “Papyrus must die” I actually came across a “PapyrusMustDie” on Twitter. http://twitter.com/PapyrusMustDie he often @replies a fellow by the name of “PapyrusFail” http://twitter.com/PapyrusFAIL
He actually dedicates a whole blog to the subject.

Is there a way to officially banish a font?

I didn’t mean to go so long between posts. I’m working on updating my website and portfolio. I’m getting closer and closer to the reality of publishing the 3D-alphabet postcards. Yup, that year is up! it was back to school, learn new skills, and now its a few ridiculous required classes and thats it. Am I in a different place then I was last year? Absolutely. Have i learned several invaluable lessons about work an life? Without a doubt. Are my skills improved? Can I code out a web site without thinking twice? Have I had my fill of Actionscript? Yes, yes and yes! Going back to school during the lowest point of our economic downturn was the smartest thing I could have done for myself and my future employer.
Its tough when you’re chugging along to see how far you’ve come. Its easy to get frustrated and easier to get fed up. Everyone around me, that I’ve met in the past year has come miles. I’ve seen people’s skills improve, attitudes heighten and a general understanding of what it takes to be in the industry. It doesn’t matter about out prior experiences, and preconceived notions about where we should be. Its a tough world out there, filled with sharks just waiting to take down the young eager designers - just a notch or two. I know, only because I’ve been there.
Your closest friends, or colleagues aren’t always out for your best interests. The sooner you learn this the better. It was only a short year ago that I was going around handing out my hard collected resources, stock photo library, vector collection and .psd files to anyone who seemed interested. They didn’t think twice about the time I put into collecting them, and like most one-sided relationships - I got nothing out of it. Call me bitter, sure. Its easy to get that way when you start to feel under appreciated. It passes, I promise and you come out the other side wiser.
The same goes to donating your precious time into working for pro-bono projects. Its all fine if you feel appreciated, but if in the end you feel chewed up and spit out. Move on. Theres no point in getting frustrated about the people who started out below you that are now threatening to kick your ass. You think they stop to give you a second thought on their way up? No. They really don’t. This will happen your whole life. Especially being a female designer, working in a male dominated workforce. It will be hard to get acknowledgment for your work and ever harder to get praise. The male ego isn’t about to let some “girl” come in and show them up. It may be harder to succeed, but not impossible. Let your work speak for itself. But also remember “Nice girls don’t get the corner office”.
I started out on my own. My own goals and aspirations, my own path, my own thing. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you are lucky enough to meet someone that happens to be traveling on a similar path as you, more power to you. Someone who inspires you, and takes inspiration from you - someone you know would be there for you no matter what design decisions you make, or where it takes you. I’m lucky enough to have found that individual who challenges me, and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the entire world.
I’ll be posting soon, maybe another theme or perhaps a catch-up of some current work.

Some SEO tips and tricks, from the little known - to the common sense :

Titles for links Did you know links can get titles too? Not only do they help the visually impaired understand where you are sending them, some search engines rank by importance as well.
Site Map A big site needs a site map. Period. The site map should link to every page on your site. On small sites, your navigation bar will serve as your sitemap. Search engines use robots to crawl your pages, and with a clear sitemap, your page will be ranked higher.
Make use of that ALT tage Will also help search engines crawling for content, and readers will disabilities.
Submit manually Submit your site to search engines yourself. Do not use programs or automatic software. These practices are frowned upon by the large search engines and can often get you penalized, or banned.
Write your pages for the users As far as your company is concerned, the large search engines have never bought anything of your site, or properly utilized your services. Write the content on your pages that is welcoming to your users. Yes, you can still put in a few keywords, but be aware of keyword-stuffing - and what a big turn-off it is.
Use social media appropriately The rule of thumb here is don’t spam. Use social media sites that are relevant to your company. Use them in a non-advertising way. Sign up for a twitter account, but don’t send out tweet after tweet of ads, this is a good way to get un followed in a heartbeat. If it is relevant, showcase events with your flickr page, a cafepress to sell items or facebook to keep in touch. Just remember not to remove the human element.
Submit to Digg and Digg clones There are lot of Digg Clones on the web, to which you can submit your pages. Make sure you don’t spam any.
Make a video and submit it to youtube Ok, its not that tough as you think it is. Make a nice tutorial or something funny (anything which will make others to link to that video or will make them watch again). Of course you will be putting your sites name at the right lower end of the video.
Use StumbleUpon smartlyInstead of spamming and degrading such a nice website, you will be good to spend some time on it. Believe me, its totally worth it. Add lot of friends in your niche (ok, again, hire someone if you don’t have time) and also stumble good pages other than yours. Also write reviews for your friends. One tip – There is a limit to number of pages from one site you can stumble(is it 15? can someone confirm it), so don’t overdo it. I think it is better if you stumble your best content pages, lists and tools
Build partnerships and make friends Build Partnerships and make friends – When you starts hanging out in forums, you will surely make some friends. So add them on yahoo/msn/skype. You can anytime ask or discuss something and can get immediately help.
Promote your blog Promote your blog – Well, now you can promote your blog and get some good indirect links and traffic to your site. But make sure you don’t spend too much time on it. After all, its your mail site which should be your primary priority.
Create an RSS feed Tell the People to subscribe your RSS feed. More often than not, whether the person subscribes to the feed depends on his first impression. If he likes the blog, he will immediately subscribe to it.
If you are running a wordpress blog than you can use wwsgd plugin. It shows a welcome message to new visitors and ask them to subscribe to RSS feed.

I’ve been fascinated with vintage ads lately, especially those in the health, beauty and war-time categories. The mentality of advertising executives was so different back then. They pay for the space, so every square inch must be filled up. I can’t help but laugh at how wordy some of these ads are. Here’s some examples:
Copytan Self Tanner 1929

Breakdown
Part of the headline:

Tan yourself in a few moments. Copytan, liquid and powder gives a glorious, even tan that beats the sun at his own game - and livens you with a new exotic beauty utterly thrilling. Its the smartest vogue of the season.

Ok, doesn’t seem so bad. This is actually one of the less verbose ones I could find. Besides referring to the sun in masculine form (madison avenue wouldn’t dare do that today) its pretty straight forward and to the point. It offers two variations of the product with descriptions on the bottom.

Lets move on to these three ads for “Lustre-Creme shampoo”. They all seem to focus on the same underlying message of pleasing your man.

Breakdown
Headline : For lovely hair all men adore!
Some interesting lines from the body copy

How sweetly feminine is the appeal of a women’s lovely hair to men…For though your hairstyle be formal or free and the wind, it your natural hair-appeal men love….Not a soap, not a liquid, Lustre-Creme shampoo is an amazing new dainty creme that lathers luxuriously in hard of soft water, and sweeps dullness away…

Its easy to miss the illustration of the women on the bottom left corner, seemingly washing her hair in a provocative (for the times) black bra. Blue bubbles surround her head - in what I can only guess is the “irresistible lather” they keep speaking of. If the body copy wasn’t enough, the advertisers thought a summary was needed to fill that expensive white space on the bottom left corner. Here’s what it says:

See how a fingertip of Lustre-Creme Shampoo bursts into heaps of fragrant lather. See how tempting it leaves your hair! Not dried-not dulled-not unruly-but silken soft, responsive, sparkling as if you’d given it a hard brushing.

The last lines my favorite - a hard brushing! Does that mean repeatedly whacking ones own hair with a hairbrush - gives the same results as this shampoo?
Take a look at the illustration Her fancy updo, does seem radiant, more radiant than any other drawing I’ve ever seen. Look at how the gentleman can’t seem to keep his face away from her head… actually upon further investigation - he doesn’t seem to be looking at her hair at all. Is he checking the time on her shadow watch? Wondering how much longer this crazy lady will be rubbing her hair all over him? No, he’s a man! Naturally his gaze goes downward, onto what we can ony imagine is the front of her see-through veil scarf. Is she wearing the bra from the bottom right? One is left wondering….ahh….the “sex” appeal of shampoo.

On to our second Lustre-Creme shampoo ad:

Breakdown
The headlines got the same jist as the previous ad:

Sparkling hair that thrills men!

Oh, well as long as it thrills him, who wouldn’t be on board?

Whats this? The advertisers leaned the women in the black bra wasn’t quiet doing justice stuck in the corner. Now she’s wearing a white bra - how angelic. Too bad her facial expression looking like shes lathering with a vat of sulfuric acid. Up top - before the body copy. They still want you to know what she’s doing is equal to a hard brushing. This “hard brushing” concept is scaring me a little more.
Some interesting lines from the body copy:

Your hair can be your most intriguing charm-when you know this special secret of shining natural hair beauty…For whether your hair is honey blonde or raven black, sunny brown or fiery red - whether its straight or curly - its your natural hair appeal that wins the eyes of men…Not a soap, not a liquid Lustre-Creme shampoo is an amazing new dainty cream that whips up luxurious lather like magic in hard or soft water - sweeps dullness away - and in its place leaves hair heavenly soft, shining, delightfully obedient.

I love the mention again of hard or soft water. They even had water softener back then? They really want us to know its dainty, feminine and not a soap or shampoo. Its a cream. Because the difference is….?
Just take a look at this illustration. In a time when photography wasn’t used in advertising, Illustration had to convey satisfaction with a product. Look at his adoring gaze, her suggestive smile and…did they mention Lustre-Cream attracts men to your hair, once they touch it they can’t let go…literally… the super adhesive agent commonly used in super glue now, is thought to be the main ingredient.

Now for the 3rd Lustre Cream Shampoo ad:
Tage line:

“Dream girl, dream girl Beautiful Lustre-Cream Girl…hair that gleams and glistens From a Lustre-Creme shampoo”

Headline:

Tonight!…Show him how much lovelier you hair can look…after a Lustre-Cream Shampoo

Breakdown:

Tonight he can SEE new sheen in your hair, FEEL its carasseble softness, THRILL to its glorious natural beauty. yes, tonight…if you use Lustre-Creme Shampoo today!

This time the image is quiet demure compared to the other two. Its only a headshot, and actually focuses on the purpose of the product. The aim is the same, pleasing your man.

The next few focus on everything from Kotex to a radio to war bonds.

Its the perfect marriage of { my all time love } - print and new emerging media. { The internet and what-not }. There’s a style, thats been out there for a while called “Magazine Style”. The style is used mostly on personal portfolio pages and blogs. It is essentially what it sounds like. The way the typography and visual elements have been arranged, resemble traditional grid-based editorial design. Most of the styles stem from the excess of Magazine Wordpress layouts out there. Like these:

I was surprised to learn that there were created using an actual algebraic equation. Much like the rule of thirds

Here’s a post I was working on during the holidays, I decided to combine them:

This one’s all about something us designers tend to forget about often. Self promotion and especially during the holiday season. This is a great time of the year to rekindle some of those client relationships that have potential project power. Whats the norm? Holiday cards. But, why stop there? Below are some creative self promotion ideas, followed by some examples of truly breathtaking pieces.
Idea for self promotion
(from my “idea-box” to yours…)

• a postcard themed package. pick something that relates to you in an way. For instance I am from South Africa, so I might school to do a jungle safari themed postcard set. I might take a trip to the local zoo, photograph some African themed animals, create stunning photographic effects and maybe even consider taking them to a 3d level, with regard to the direct-mail approach.
• play off an industry term. For example, in web-design one of the main things we offer our clients in “clean-semantic code” here we will go off the word “clean”. Contact a soap manufacturer, order 100 bars of plain soap in bulk, get custom printed boxes with your graphic on them - and send your clients something humorous, while asserting your place in the creative community.
• Another idea, think of things people use during the holidays. I know people spend a good part of this season traveling from one place to another. Why not send them custom luggage tags? You want something with staying power in the mind. Not just another holiday card in the pile, but something really original, and something that reminds them how much you appreciate their business.
A great examples of good self-promotional design
AIGA’s maps of Denver
When the AIGA design conference came to Denver last year, 6,000 attendees each received a guide to Denver created by a team of local designers to develop the content, dozens of Colorado designers suggested hundreds of their favorite places in town. Their submissions were placed on a giant map and a team of creatives divided Denver into its ten best intersections, each serving as the heart of a neighborhood covered in the book. The intro to each neighborhood section was designed by a local firm or freelancer.

A little microblog here: to give mention to a cool site I came across.

Meomi is dedicated to the creation of compelling visual experiences and narratives. We create work for numerous mediums and strongly believe in design that delights, entices, and inspires.
MEOMI is Vicki Wong (Vancouver) and Michael Murphy (LA). Meomi’s artwork has been featured in numerous illustration and design books, while their characters have appeared on clothing, toys, merchandise, and magazines worldwide. Meomi has created art for such clients as Google, Electronic Arts, Girls Inc., Time Out Magazine, Cyworld, Nick Jr., Bang-on Clothing, and CBC4Kids.

Besides client work, Meomi also moonlights as the authors and illustrators behind the Octonauts children book series. Meomi spends much of their spare time, sitting around in the attic, making up silly stories, drinking tea and drawing strange creatures. (Many of which are available for licensing.)

The site is just plain awesomeness. First of all : “Cloud house”! How fantastical, how promising, you know a mysterious twinkle lay in the eyes of the creator when that name appeared. Second of all; way to be original with the Japanese inspired characters by making them original in a sea of imitators. The cute little touches all around the site:
The piano, enclosed in its own cubby:

The bottom:

And my personal favorite, the little dog in the pink sweater

Its the little things, the personalities that come out with the pages especially since they dedicate their “brand” (/”movement”?) to the creation of compelling visual experiences and narratives in all different mediums. To me, this shows a willingness to be versatile, even though they established their brand, at the current time with a “look and feel” - they come off as having the creative energy and talent to rock-the-pencil (if you will…) at any style a client could ask for.

So, as tangents often do in writing - this one has led me to branding…the idea of creating a personal aurora to your business, or to you (as freelancers often do). A consistent look, something clients can come to expect from you; therefore drawing out reliability. Absolutely necessary for the survival of any law or business firm. I still strive for the same dependability as they do, but how can I define my own style, and still want to stick with it as trends die?

“Real life”
The site was created with no purpose other than to display my work. Everything else was just fluff. A year ago - school wasn’t even in my possibilities - and i needed a self-hosted website to post my work to Aquent and other job boards for show. There was no pressure on how to present myself. I officially decided to give HTML one final shot at this time, after battling it for a while. Once I got started, I wanted to keep going. Try out all the things I loved in design collectively. I had no official experience with usability at this time, and it was all about showing off what I could do design wise. I fumbled around with the code, as i went - but not my main concern. The result was quiet humerous, as you would imagine someone not having used HTML and CSS for over two years, I was impressed that i could translate things i loved about the print world I was so familiar with, into (slightly obtrusive) code. Each page had a completely different look and feel ( a big no-no for personal websites, and web know-how). I still looked at the site as a fancy way to display my work, and in essence it really is. I decided to narrow all my choices down, until I came up with one cohesive mis-match heaven of all the styles I’ve taken influence from…ever. It changes, sure. All the time. Five times a day. Every time something makes me look twice, analyze and decide its to my liking. How I present myself to the world in this fantasy, fairy-tale like, light effects, slightly girly way isn’t how I choose to always be seen, but in coming to terms with who I am as a designer, its something i don’t mind being known for, as long as its clear I can create any style on demand - essentially the very core of being a designer.

A few years ago while visiting Tokyo I got the honor of visiting the National Graphic Design exhibit (and most notably MC Escher’s early work). There are 23 different wards of the city, and each ward has its own elected mayor and assembly. That being stated, the individual sub-sections of the city also have their own look and feel. My favorite area, known as Akihabara is the major shopping district for electronics. Imagine walking through the streets of any anime you’ve ever seen, blown up and in your face.

So, that gives you an idea of the design in Tokyo, and the influences the people over there gather inspiration from.
Now, hop over the pond for a moment with me; Portland, Oregon. The home of Wieden+Kennedy, an independtly owned American advertising agency best known for its work with Nike. (”Just do it”)I

n 2002, the Gunn Report named W+K as the most-awarded agency in the world, and the agency was AdWeek’s “Global Agency of the Year” in 2007.

In 2003, Wieden+Kennedy created W+K TokyoLab, a record label and creative workshop based out of the agency’s Tokyo office. Since 2003, W+K TokyoLab has released CD/DVD titles that combine music, graphics, and film. TokyoLab’s current roster features local hip-hop and electronic artists including Hifana, DJ Uppercut, Afra, and Takagi Masakatsu.

The designers embraced the concept of Hybrid Design. They have the mission of bringing new experiences, that can only be created with the backdrop of tokyo, through a global mix of music and visual effects. “The whole idea is the essence of Tokyo, using the power of the city to attract the most innovative creative collaborators from around the world. We are passionate about the development of new ideas with our creators and connecting them to a new audience. Simply it is about good music, fresh visuals and new concepts of creative expression”.

Here are two of the videos that have come out of this project:

I discovered this project shortly after I returned home, so I never got the chance to experience the creative power first hand. It stuck with me, and if nothing else it taught me the greatest inspiration can be pulled from whats around you. The architecture of your local library, the supermarket parking lot, the parks and nature landscapes can all point you in the right direction.

Visiting home means seeing all the things you left behind, and for me that includes my early design portfolio. It was so much fun to go through the early, early work and see how far I’ve come. My favorite was the “campaign” I did for Visa, where i conceptualized difference credit cards - personalized for any occasion. This was before it became common practice to have photos on cards. My analytic write-up described a photo-booth kiosk placed inside banks, where people could get pictures taken and printed on cards right away. This was before keychain memory cards, and the modern conveniences we are used to now. I got the idea to re-design the project when I started thinking about how the idea could be modernized, so seven years later I am getting ready to re-visit one of my oldest projects, I’ll post the results as soon as I’m done.
Another project i found was my first CD cover. It was really hands on and I choose to do Pink Floyds “Dark side of the Moon”. We started out sketching on 18″ x 18″ pieces of fiberglass. Next we transfered our designs onto a special stencil vinyl and cut them out. Then we learned to use the airbrush machine which was so much fun. I was impressed with how much control over color blending I actually had, and if it wasn’t for the expensive price of the machine I would have kept doing it. Next we scanned our airbrush designs with the large-format, and traced over them in Illustrator (the assignment was to learn the pen tool even better) and create the rest of the album cover on the computer. That was a fun one to see.
The last project I was happy to see was our first group campaign for the “Muse D’Orsay” in Paris. This was the first time I learned the inner working of an agency. Each person in our group was given a specific position based on our skills. There was the creative director, the copywriter, the pre-press production artist and the graphic designer. I was given the job of graphic designer because even at that time I proved to be super-savy with the computer. The objective of the project was to create a full fledged campaign for the Museum. Printed pieces, demographic analysis and media implementation. Then we had to dress up and pitch the project to our family and friends that came and saw us! I have some of the printed materials, and i almost fell to the floor when i saw what font we choose (willingly) for the logo. None other than the dreaded Papyrus!! We sat there, as a group, pondering the typeface choices - and that is what we decided would represent a museum that houses some of the best artwork from the 18th and 19th century.
Some other notable projects I came across:
• The mixed media painting, that resulted in the state fair heartbreak
• The Alamosa Rotary club photography project
• The bevel heavy, hand that opens up to a circuit board (it wasn’t overdone at the time)
• The Herbal Essences AD, that hung in the Scottsdale School District office
• The Sedona Jazz festival poster
anyways, it makes me so happy as to where I am today.
